Cézanne’s Problem of Perceptual Synthesis and the AI Remaking of Artistic Representation

Abstract: Cézanne devoted his life to exploring the instability of perceptual synthesis, yet in his later years technical constraints prevented him from extending his artistic experiments, leading to a crisis of representation. The emergence of generative AI image technologies has transformed representation into a collaborative mode of creation, allowing the instability of perceptual synthesis to find new representational forms through iterative adjustment and recombination across numerous experimental outputs. This development substantially breaks through the irreversibility of traditional artistic processes and the limitations of individual creators. AI-enabled brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies promise to reconfigure the symbiotic relationship between perceptual synthesis and technology, enabling perceptual synthesis to penetrate the informational world and to address its representational challenges through processes of self-generation. AI and BCI thus offer new technical pathways to Cézanne’s dilemma of representation, transcending his “plane-depth” mechanism and realizing a multidimensional integration of time, space, and perceptual synthesis. In this way they gesture toward a shift from “plane-depth” to “being-dimensionality,” liberating beauty from the constraints of the pictorial surface and inaugurating an era of multidimensional symbiosis among human perception, images, and life itself—a movement toward the ultimate emancipation of life and its modes of expression.

摘要: 塞尚一生探索知觉综合的不稳定性,晚年因技术局限而未竟其艺术实验,面临再现危机。生成式AI图像技术的出现,使再现转变为协同性的创造,知觉综合的不稳定性得以在众多试验性作品的调整与合成中逐渐找到其再现形式,极大突破了传统创作过程的不可逆性及创作者个体局限。搭载AI的脑机接口技术(BCI)有望重塑知觉综合与技术之间的共生关系,使知觉综合能够深入信息世界,通过自创生的方式不断解决知觉综合的再现难题。AI与BCI将为塞尚难题提供新的技术途径,并超越塞尚的“平面—深度”机制,实现时间、空间与知觉综合的多重融合,转向“存在—维度性”,使美解脱出平面束缚,迎来人、知觉、图像的多维共生时代,面向生命及其表现形式的终极解放。
