Abstract: Given that the Shanhaijing was introduced to Japan relatively early and had a profound, enduring impact, it serves as a typical text along the “Road of Books.” An analysis of its reception offers a vital lens to examine the dynamics of foreign cultural assimilation in ancient Japan. Confronted with the hegemonic influx of Chinese civilization, ancient Japan tended to disassemble and prune various texts into discrete “knowledge bundles,” which were then classified and reconfigured according to indigenous cultural logic to achieve internalization. This initial phase is analytically termed the stage of “subtractive accommodation.” Conversely, ancient Japanese intellectuals might also re-interpret and elaborate on these classics through its own cultural perspective, extracting salient thematic keywords to serve as a structural framework, which was then continually replenished with homologous local content, effectively transforming the classic into a dynamic “thematic aggregate.” This secondary phase is designated the stage of “additive integration.” It is the synergistic operation of these dual mechanisms of subtractive accommodation and additive integration that enables ancient Japan to achieve the Yǐ Jǐ Huà Tā (以己化他, “transforming the Other through the Self”) and solidify the foundation of its distinct cultural system.
