The Appropriated Romanticism and the Self-Consciousness of Resistance: Revisiting Yu Dafu’s Reception of Rousseau

Abstract

Abstract: Like Rousseau, Yu Dafu, the “Chinese Rousseau,” is also considered a writer full of contradictions, particularly between his literary writings and his left-wing ideology. Few scholars have examined his Rousseauist literary writings and his defense of Rousseau in the context of his literary and political thoughts. As the Western philosopher who exerts the greatest influence on Yu Dafu, Rousseau is the key figure for interpreting the “unity” problem in Yu Dafu’s thoughts. By absorbing and transforming Rousseauism, and by seeing romanticism as a form of resistance and enlightenment, Yu Dafu seeks the possibilities of the salvation of both individuality and nationality.

摘要： 同卢梭一样,“中国卢骚”郁达夫也被认为是一个充满矛盾的作家。他的文学作品与其左翼思想之间的矛盾尚未得到解决。目前学界鲜有论者将郁达夫的卢梭式文学创作及其为卢梭的辩护放到其文学与政治思想体系中进行考察。作为对郁达夫影响最大的西方哲人,卢梭是解读郁达夫创作实践与思想的一体性问题的关键人物。本文拟以卢梭接受史为切入点,从郁达夫1928年为卢梭辩护谈起,进而解读其早期创作,认为郁达夫通过对卢梭主义的吸纳与改造,以浪漫主义作为反抗与启蒙手段,探索个人与国家同时获得拯救的方案。
