Abstract: Russia formally recognized the USA in 1803 and established diplomatic relations with the USA in 1809. From that time until the October Revolution, the two sides maintained friendly relations, with occasional cultural and commercial exchanges, especially during the American Civil War, when Russia tended to support the Union government of the North, and in 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States at a low price. These events aroused American interest in Russian culture. As a nation of immigrants, the United States attracted many migrants from Russian-controlled European populations, who laid the foundation for Slavic studies in American academia. The democratic system in the U.S. allowed intellectuals to observe Russian issues beyond the confines of bilateral relations, focusing also on matters like anti-Semitism in Imperial Russia and internal revolutions. This led to closer ties between Russian literary and artistic circles and their American counterparts.
