The Concept of “Making” in Western Poetics and Its Translation and Research in China

Abstract: “Making” is a vital concept in the context of Chinese and Western poetics. In ancient Greece, “Making” and “poetry” have the same original meaning (). Therefore, the poet is regarded as the “maker”(craftsman). Because ancient Greek philosophers believed that reality came from the imitation of truth, Plato worried that people might be confused by poetry making; Aristotle believed that poetry formed through making was indispensable to the growth of human mind. As far as Chinese traditional poetics, there are also rich ideological resources and poetic discussions based on “making” in the traditional Chinese context. However, due to the confusion of the concepts of “making” and “creation” in the early translation process, as well as the need to talk about the differences between China and the West in order to establish their own subjectivity, the discussion on this issue in Chinese poetics has attracted little attention for a long time. In recent years, with the arise of research on “things” all over the world, many scholars began to pay attention to the problem of “making” in the context of Chinese poetics, and pointed out that the vocabulary and mode of thinking related to “making” have a profound impact on poetics. At the same time, because “making” is related to an original way of life, this research trend also responds to the deep problems in the context of the times, which is of great significance.

摘要: “制作”是中西诗学语境中非常重要的概念。古希腊的“制作”与“诗”同源(),因而诗人被视作“制作者”。由于古希腊哲学家认为,现实来自对真理的模仿,故而柏拉图警惕诗歌制作对真理的远离;亚里士多德则认为,经由制作而形成的诗歌,对人的心灵成长不可或缺。中国传统语境中也有基于“制作”的丰富思想资源和诗学讨论,但由于早期译介过程中,“制作”和“创作”概念的混淆,加上言说中西之异以确立自身主体性的需要,中国诗学中关于这一问题的研究较少。近年来,随着世界范围内的“物”之研究转向,许多学者开始关注到中国诗学语境中的“制作”问题,指出“制作”的相关语汇、思维方式对传统诗学具有深刻影响。同时,由于“制作”关联到一种原初的生活方式,这一转向也回应了时代语境的深层问题,具有重要意义。
