On the Origin of Kan Kikuchi in Lu Xun's Works and Translation

Abstract

Abstract: Japanese writer Kan Kikuchi is an important foreign resource in Lu Xun's writing and translation. Lu Xun is quite rational and conscious in his reading, selection of translation, acceptance and digestion. Based on the literary historical facts such as that Lu Xun selects and translates Kan Kikuchi's “The End of Miuraemono” and “A Proscription on Revenge” from 1921 to 1922, this paper examines the connection between Lu Xun as a translator and creator and Kan Kikuchi as a whole. In combination with Lu Xun's reading history of Kan Kikuchi, this paper concludes that Lu Xun and Kan Kikuchi share common ideology in terms of life experiences, frustrated psychology and literary thoughts. Lu Xun affirms Kan Kikuchi's exploration of “human nature”. Through the cultural tradition comparison between Bushido and the Confucian ethical code, he deepens the understanding of national character, and strengthens the critical mood of replacing love with hatred in this period. In the creation of “Forging the Swords”, Lu Xun adopts Kan Kikuchi's brave and critical literary concept and incorporates it into the structure of revenge narrative.

摘要： 日本作家菊池宽在鲁迅著译实践中是一个重要的域外资源,鲁迅对他的阅读、选译、接受与消化是相当理性而自觉的。本文基于鲁迅在1921-1922年选译菊池宽的“三浦右门卫的最后”“复仇的话”等文学史实,整体考察作为翻译者与创作者的鲁迅与菊池宽之间的内在关联。结合鲁迅的菊池宽阅读史,本文认为鲁迅与菊池宽在人生际遇、受挫心理、文学思想上存在共鸣,鲁迅肯定菊池宽对于“人间性”的发掘,通过武士道与名教的文化传统对比,深化国民性认知,并强化这一时期以憎代替爱的批判情绪。在“铸剑”的创作中,鲁迅接续了菊池宽勇猛批判的文学观念,并将其融入复仇叙事的结构之中。
