Abstract: By examining the true identity of the translator, the original text, and the research value of “John Dos Passos”, which was translated by Yi Junli and published in The National News (guo min xin wen), this paper points out that the translator is not the previously recognized Mu Shiying, and that the original text of “John Dos Passos” is “Writers in the Wilderness II: John Dos Passos” written by Margaret Marshall in 1940. The discovery of this Chinese translation can be used not only to study the dissemination and reception of Dos Passos in China, but also to show that the literary relationship between Mu Shiying and Dos Passos is constructed by the “shared history” of the West and China in the 20th century.

Key words: The National News, Mu Shiying, John Dos Passos, “shared history”

(Writers in the Wilderness Ⅱ: John Dos Passos)。
