Abstract: The literary works by Korean writers in the Japanese colonial era are important contexts to describe modern Chinese development from the perspective of foreigners. Compared with the works with the background of Northeast China, these works of Shanghai were stories mainly about Korean independence activists, who studied the Chinese revolution of 1911, eager for Korean independence and building of a modern country, fighting Japanese occupancy under hard situation. The city of Shanghai was perceived and imagined by these Korean writers as the city of independence movement and revolution, with dual characters of both civilization and darkness, and a city of colonization. All these images of Shanghai were well reflected and criticized by these works. The images by Korean writers showed us the fact of Anti-Japanese union between China and Korea under common destiny, showed the Korean intellectuals' critical thought on exploring the Korean independence and building of a modern nation, and the help and backup from China to the Korean independence movement. These works also contributed greatly to the development of Korean modern literature.
