Ekphrasis in “When You are Old”: Interart Translation in the Circulation of World Literature

Abstract

Abstract: “When You Are Old” has undergone a series of intertexual and interart transformation from Ronsard's French poem to Yeats' English poem, Zhao Zhao's Chinese song and multi-lingual cover songs. Critics have paid much attention to Yeats' rewriting of Ronsard's poem and Chinese translation of Yeats's poems, while this paper explores the interart and thematic translation of Yeats's poem in the circulation of Chinese culture. In particular, a case study of the ekphrasitic song by Chinese singer Zhao Zhao with a thorough analysis of its birth and significant cultural and historical implications, will shed some light on the world literature and comparative literature studies, and provide a good lesson for the production and circulation of art and literature in the New Media Age.

摘要： 《当你老了》问世以来,在进入世界文学的流通过程中,先后经历了从龙萨法语诗、叶芝英语诗到中文译诗的跨语言转换,再到赵照中文歌曲以及多语种翻唱歌曲的跨艺术转换。学界多关注叶芝对龙萨的改写以及叶芝诗作的中文译介。本文聚焦叶芝诗作在中国文化流通语境中的跨艺术转换和主题嬗变,重点分析从爱尔兰诗人叶芝到中国歌手赵照之间的“艺格符换”现象,分析其发生原因及意义生成,探讨此个案对世界文学和比较文学研究的意义,为新媒体时代的文艺创作与传播提供借鉴。
