Abstract: Guo Moruo sought to locate the individual and history within the sprawling world of Faust, linking the “spirit of the times” between 19th-century Germany and 20th-century China and Japan. In China’s emotionalist era, Guo’s translation moved beyond the framework of German Romanticism, transforming pantheistic discourse into the modern rhetoric of the “Cult of Qing.” The historical lens dissolved Faust’s original context, suspending the Romantic subject while rendering the lyrical version of the Guo’s Faust transient. By the mid-1920s, Guo’s historical materialist critique of knowledge production aligned with Goethe’s reflections on the Enlightenment. Mediated by Kantian aesthetics, this opened a space where left-wing politics met Goethe’s literary world. Later, through a renewed focus on Christianity in Faust, Guo sacralized the practice of everyday life, advancing a people-centered vision and a sense of historical inevitability.
