Abstract: In its endeavor to define and determine the basis of Irish claims for political independence, the Irish Dramatic Movement attempted to forge the national identity, literature and consciousness. The translation and spread of works of the Movement in China began during the May Fourth Movement period when it was interpreted as the incorporation of dramatic enlightenment and enlightening drama for China to pursue both its own artistic and political agenda. Over the century-long cross-cultural journey, though the fate of the Irish Dramatic Movement in China has undergone ups and downs due to its conformity to or deviation from the dominant themes, ideology and poetics of changing times, its major works have found their way into China and contributed to China's literary and social modernization, most notably to the birth and development of China's modern spoken drama (huaju).
