Re-exploring the “Meaning” of Lu Xun's Japanese Works: Focusing on “Confucius in Modern China”

Abstract: Lu Xun's “Confucius in Modern China” is translated from the Japanese works of the same title in Japanese magazine Reform. For the former, there have been multi-dimensional researches in domestic academic circles, but there has been a lack of due attention to the Japanese original text and its generative context. This paper focuses on “Confucius in Modern China” in Japanese. On the basis of summarizing how Lu Xun obtained the “discourse power” of Japanese media, this paper reveals the author's creative intention and analyzes the deep connotation and specific meaning in the Japanese context. Although the contents of the original Japanese and Chinese versions of this work are the same, with the transformation of the languages, they have great differences in the preset readers, critical objects and understanding and acceptance. Therefore, they have the characteristics of “double reading” between Japan and China, so they should not be treated equally. In particular, the criticism and negation of Japan's pseudo respect for Confucius implied in the original Japanese should not be obscured by the Chinese translation.
