Abstract: This essay attempts to outline the socio-historical framework of the dissemination and reception of modern Chinese literature in the Germanophone world by focusing on several representative episodes in the narrative foreground of modern Sino-German literary exchange. Ever since the beginning of the 20^th century, Sino-German literary exchange has been inseparable from the interpersonal communication between German and Chinese intellectuals. While works from very few distinguished authors gained almost simultaneous German translation and spread thanks to the conscientious sinologists as literary agents throughout the two World Wars, the reception of these works have rarely exceeded academic readership. The interwar dissemination of Chinese literature in German-speaking regions was led by intellectuals from both worlds seeking for a common ground to counter the disastrous political reality across East and West, whereas the post-War readership of modern Chinese literature in Germany gradually expanded beyond the Sinology circle. The literary exchange afterwards adopted an increasingly ideological form, along with the geopolitical division of Germany and the further politicization of literary works in China, while reflecting the political expression of the Sino-German intelligentsia.
