Abstract: Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werther is one of the most important works in the “Sturm und Drang” period in German literature. Since its publication, this epistolary novel has received enthusiastic response, and has been reprinted, republished. However, the appearance of this novel today is actually quite different from the first edition of 1774, because of the many modifications made by Goethe in 1787. The changes mainly involve language style, plot, and narrative perspective. The paper will study these important differences, paying special attention to the changes of characterization and new side stories, and meanwhile exploring the reasons and significance of these differences in the light of the social acceptance of the novel and the change of writer's own disposition.
