Abstract: In Lu Xun, Takeuchi Yoshimi described the root of Lu Xun's literature as “nothingness” that cannot be defined by “words.” Tracing the process through which the thought of “the nonexistence of words” was established, is a key to understanding the text of Lu Xun. Initially, Takeuchi constructed his own knowledge system by the word of “Chinese Literature,” resisting traditional academia. However, as Japan's invasion of China intensified, Takeuchi came to realize the domination of politics over literature, and the limitations of words. To resist the political situation that was manipulating literature, Takeuchi, inspired by works such as Zhou Zuoren's “A Short Note on Lun Yu” and Nakano Shigeharu's A Note on Saito Mokichi, continually adjusted his approach to pursue words. Ultimately, he understood a literary spirit that transcends words and manifests as an attitude or an action. It was through the journey of pursuing, doubting, and finally transcending the words, that Takeuchi arrived at the understanding of “the nonexistence of words” and “nothingness” in Lu Xun.
