Abstract: The Spanish conquest and colonization provided the foundation for the imagination of a transatlantic Hispanic literary community, which was reinforced by the shifting hegemonies from Spanish Empire to the rising U.S. Empire at the turn of the 20th century. During the 20th century, Hispanic American cosmopolitan intellectuals presented an impulse of universality. Modernistas such as Rubén Darío embraced the Paris-centered republic of world literature to modernize the Hispanic American literary techniques. The Latin American literary boom, inspired by the Cuban Revolution and blessed by the global structure of the Cultural Cold War, highlighted cultural particularities, and realized the cosmopolitan desires of the early 20th century modernistas. The tension of the universal belonging and the self-representation marginality will reproduce in the Latin American discourses of world literature.
