Abstract: Featuring pioneering experiments, diverse styles and remarkable productions, the intercultural theatre has been a highlight of world theatre in the past few decades. So far, the theoretical discourse on intercultural theatre has usually been based on western experience, paying insufficient attention to the relevant achievements in China and elsewhere. In the meantime, it has not given full consideration to the social and non-social factors involved in the process of the performance. Drawing on Latour's “Actor-Network-Theory”, this article proposes to approach the intercultural theatre as an event composed of diverse factors of the social, cultural and political. From a Chinese-Western comparative perspective, this study will propose a new paradigm of interculturalism that treats performance as a positive, constructive and performative act.
