Abstract: When the interaction between sinologists and Anglo-American modernists has been underestimated, this paper focuses on Arthur Waley, the famous 20th century British sinologist, to explore the role of his Chinese-English translation and achievements of sinology in promoting Anglo-American modernism. As a key figure in making the transformation of the British traditional sinology to modern sinology, Waley's translation theory and practice reflect his distinct innovation and modern characteristics, interdependent with the aesthetic modernity as the reconsideration of enlightenment modernity in the west. Moreover, influenced by both British and American modernism, his sinology offers its exotic and fresh contribution to the development of this discipline. Waley's emphasis on Chinese Taoist philosophy and praise for the harmony between man and nature in Chinese literature facilitated the pursuit for new values of Anglo-American modernists. His interpretation of Xie He's six “Methods”, such as “rhythmic vitality” (qi yun sheng dong), supported the spiritual exploration of Anglo-American modernism, and made “rhythm” its important formal feature.
