套用的哲学观——I.A.瑞恰慈文论中的“中庸”之再考证

摘要: 英国文艺理论家I.A.瑞恰慈通常被认为是在中国古典文化,特别是儒家中庸之道的影响下,形成了一种注重均衡与和谐的批评观。不过,深入剖析瑞恰慈的批评文著可以发现,尽管他经常引用中国古代文化典故和名言语录佐证其理论观点,但他的“中庸”思想实际上更多来自西方哲学、文艺学和心理学等多种学科理论。本文将从西方学术视角审视瑞恰慈的批评文论,从他提出的“综感”“冲动平衡”和“包容诗”等具有显著中庸色彩的核心概念入手,论述瑞恰慈的“中庸”虽然借鉴了中国文化,但在相当大的程度上是对古希腊哲学、英国浪漫主义诗学以及西方现代心理学等相关理论的融合与重述,进而反观瑞恰慈在中庸问题上“以西释中”的策略。

Abstract: I. A. Richards's notion of literary criticism, which emphasizes balance and harmony, is often thought to be formed under the influence of ancient Chinese culture, especially the Confucian Chung Yung, the doctrine of the golden mean. However, through an in-depth examination of his critical works, it can be found that although he frequently quotes from Chinese Classics in support of his views, his idea of “Chung Yung”mainly stems from Western disciplinary fields, such as philosophy, literature and art, and psychology. This paper offers an analysis of Richards' literary criticism by examining from the Western perspective “synaesthesis”, “equilibrium of impulses”, “poetry of inclusion” and other core concepts with the obvious quality of Chung Yung in Richards' literary theory. It argues that Richard's “Chung Yung”, though drawn from Chinese culture, is to a large extent an integration and reiteration of the relevant theories from Greek philosophy, British Romantic poetics and modern Western psychology, thus demonstrating his efforts in interpreting Chinese philosophy by Western theories.
