Abstract: Western Romanticism in 19th century has been disseminated and studied in China for over 100 years. However, there are still many misunderstandings about it due to the inadequate depth of research and affect from local social, historical and cultural traditions. Romanticism both inherited from and rebelled against the Enlightenment. This rebellion means creation. Similarly, the reflection of Romanticism on the French Revolution strengthened and highlighted the core status of the idea of liberty in its value system. The idea of liberty was embodied in various dimensions like “individual liberty and ontological solitude”, “religious liberty and medieval sentiments”, “political liberty and social critique” and “artistic liberty and literary revolution”, etc. This not only shows the semantic multiplicity but also makes western literature first achieve the transcendence of emotion over reason, literature over reality, aesthetic over utility, genius over mediocre mass. As a result, Romanticism became a literary revolution with key significance in modern and contemporary Western literary history and prepared a solid foundation in humanity and aesthetics for the generation and development of modern western literature in the 20th century.
