Chinese Painting and Chinese Garden: Schopenhauer and Wang Guowei in the Cultural Exchange between China and the West

摘要: 叔本华在《作为意志和表象的世界》中对中国画有所贬低,而对中国园林赞赏不已,认为西方绘画与中国园林分别意味着天才的“直观”和“自然”的客观精神。叔本华的观点深化了当时西方社会对中国画和中国园林的普遍认知,但仍存在着一些误读。巧合的是,叔本华“直观”与“自然”的概念辗转半个多世纪后被王国维所接受,并进而运用于中国文学批评中。所谓“著一‘闹’字,而境界全出”,其中所指“境界”实际上就是叔本华眼中西方绘画和中国园林所象征的“直观”之理念和“自然”的客观精神的合体。从这个例子可见,一般而言的由西至中、由叔本华至王国维的中西影响接受研究范式,也要从“源头”重新审视。

Abstract: Schopenhauer criticized Chinese painting in The World as Will and Idea, but praised Chinese garden. He thinks that Western painting and Chinese garden respectively mean the genius' “intuition” and the objective spirit of “nature”. Although Schopenhauer's view deepened the general cognition of Chinese painting and Chinese garden in the western society at that time, he still misunderstood the style and concept of Chinese painting and garden. But coincidentally, Schopenhauer's concepts of “intuition” and “nature” were accepted by Wang Guowei after more than half a century, and used in Chinese literary criticism. The so-called “add the word ‘nao’ and ching-chieh will be completely expressed” refers to “ching-chieh” as a combination of the genius’ “intuitive” and the objective spirit of “nature” symbolized by Western painting and Chinese garden. From this example, we can see that, the research paradigm of Chinese and Western influence acceptance from the west to China and from Schopenhauer to Wang Guowei should be re-examined from the “Origin”.
