Abstract: Xie Tianzhen is a scholar who has made great contributions to translation studies since the Reform and Opening-up. This paper discusses the continuation and change of his translation theory from the academic contribution of Medio-Translatology and Xie Tianzhen's later transformation from “In-coming translation” to “Out-going translation”. His later academic transformation is directly related to the study of overseas Chinese studies. His research on “Out-going translation” directly promoted the construction of the theory of Chinese culture going abroad. Since the study of overseas Chinese studies is a broad academic field, there are both translations and researches of Chinese literature and history, and the dissemination of knowledge coexists with the “variable” and “misreading” translations. Therefore, “Translatology” based on the translation of literary texts is facing new problems. How to deal with the intellectual and literary problems in the translation of overseas Chinese Studies as a whole, and how to develop a translation theory which is really created by Chinese academia on the basis of Chinese translation practice instead of following the western translation theory, are the great academic heritages left by Prof. Xie Tianzhen.
