Abstract: Doing comparative literature studies may well start with different perspectives. Late Chinese scholar Xie Tianzhen just did comparative literature studies from the perspective of translation studies and made remarkable achievements. Having read wide various foreign references on comparative literature and translation studies, Xie found the interrelations between these two fields. Thus he created a subdiscipline of Chinese characteristics naming it “Medio-translatology”. That is, from the perspective of comparative literature, it is engaged in exploring how one literature has been disseminated and received in another literature or other literatures through translation. Unlike his peers dealing with translation on the linguistic level, Xie's study is characterized by laying more emphasis on how the translated work has been received and disseminated in another cultural context. Thus he has entered the area of comparative literature from translation studies inserting in it some fresh elements. By observing this case, the author holds that the more unique style a translator has, the more subjective consciousness he will give play to as literary translation is after all a (re)creative art. Excellent translations are of the same value with the original, and should thereby be equally treated by the academic community.
