Abstract: Contextualism reflected in many disciplines of contemporary western humanities influences cultural researches of contemporary American sinology. Peter Charles Sturman's case study on Northern Song Calligrapher Mi Fu and Jonathan Hay's on Qing painter Shitao are typical examples of the contextualist methodology in American sinological researches on Chinese art. They focused on the combination of the biographical method and analyses of artworks, detailed macro and micro contexts which the artists and their artworks faced, rebuilt the net of relationship and consciousness centered on individual artists and made them relevant to artworks and notions and helpful to interpretations of art. Idealistic collisions exists on hermeneutical issues of contexts in Chinese art researches of American sinology between contextualism and classic disciplinary frames of modern western art history. Sturman and Hay's cases provide their answers with the characteristics of contemporary hermeneutics.
