Abstract: The translation of foreign novels reached an unprecedented climax in the last decade or so in the late Qing Dynasty. However, explanatory notes in the translated novels have always been ignored and there has never been any special research. Compared with the notes of the popular novels in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, those of the translated novels in the late Qing Dynasty show the characteristics of “old format and new essence”, and possess high historical and textual value. It is of indispensable value and significance to explore the translation strategies and the relationship between translators and readers. Through the special perspective, we can also grasp the evolution of translators' translation ideals at that period. It is a co-text that cannot be ignored.
