Abstract: There are two reasons to compare Qian Zhongshu's metaphor thesis and conceptual metaphor theory(CMT). First, Qian cited Metaphors We Live By for several times in his old age. Second, Qian's metaphor study has implicit systematicity. There are many similarities between them: both pay attention to the regular patterns among metaphorical expressions; both try to give motivated explanation for metaphor; both compare metaphors from different languages and cultures; both point out the fact there are many shared metaphors between literature and philosophy. Yet there are also many differences. It will deepen our understanding of the phenomena of metaphor and lead to an acute evaluation of the heritage of Qian by clarifying these similarities and differences.
