Abstract: Sea is the key theme of the overseas travels in the late Qing Dynasty and Republican China. Overseas travels are the most valuable literature on the experience of facing the sea and the imagination of the world in the early modern China. Overseas travelers experience a long journey of sailing and witness the vastness,unpredictability of the sea and the modern navigation technology. They describe the ocean scenery and their own feeling in poetic language and sublime style and record the latitude, longitude, climate, wind direction, current and wave of the sea in the way of scientific research. Overseas travels outline the map of navigation routes, which affects the geographical scope of the traveler's imagination and cognition of the world. They focus on the relationship between maritime hegemony, sovereignty and the order of the world, the sea and civilization.
