Abstract: Focusing on the explorations of Franco Moretti, Stanford Literary Lab and the Textual Optics Lab, this article attempts to use “world literature” to examine the “Moretti Road” and discover the paradox and difficulty faced by his early empirical exploration, along with tracing its trajectory and import into the wave of digital humanities. Starting from the most difficult methodological problems in world literature, this article shows that although the concept of “distant reading” derived from the Annales School was regarded as an effective solution to the crisis in comparative literature, it eventually proved to be too limited. Only after “cultural analytics” turned towards digital humanities has it been possible to move beyond the empirical and “economic determinism” in the abstract study of “world literature” to develop a more productive practice of computational criticism.
