Abstract: Popular music plays an important role in the works of the French writer J. M. G. Le Clézio, the 2008 Nobel Prize winner. Rock and roll in his novels written in the 1960s and 1970s shows the rebellion of French baby-boomers whereas jazz in his novels published since the 1980s often corresponds with the themes of migration and cultural pluralism. In addition to the thematic resonance, such characteristics as R&B in rock and roll and Swing in jazz can also be detected respectively in Le Clézio's early and later works, thereby revealing two distinct writing styles throughout his literary career. The present paper is an attempt to analyze and compare the importance of rock and roll in Le Clézio's early novels and that of jazz in his later novels from two perspectives: theme and style, in order to propose that the evolution of the writer's literary creation is inseparable from his choice of popular music in his works.
