Abstract: The tragicomedy An Angel Comes to Babylon by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, a famous Swiss dramatist, reveals the profound conflicts between good and evil, beauty and ugliness, and heaven and earth. The play also explores the theme of “theodicy” as a significant topic in the history of thought. This paper focuses on the revelation of “theodicy” and takes typical views in the development of history of thought and history of literature into consideration. It will be analyzed from three perspectives: the justice of God and the evil of the world, heavenly grace in the context of “theodicy” and “the brave man” as a replacement of “theodicy”. Following conclusions will be based on an deep-going analysis: “Theodicy” is not credible and individuals in the community of shared destiny can overcome the earthly world only when he, as “the brave man”, makes use of human reason wisely and moderately.
