Abstract: For the first time, this paper argues that “The Goldfish” written by Japanese writer Suzuki Miekichi was one of the sources and triggers for the creation of Lu Xun's story “Regret for the Past.” “The Goldfish” was translated into Chinese by Zhou Zuoren and was part of Collection of Modern Japanese Stories by Zhou brothers. There were great similarities between “Regret for the Past” and “The Goldfish” in main plot, narrative mode, narrative perspective, lyric style, genre, language features, characters, details and so on. Inspired by “The Goldfish”, Lu Xun created his unique story “Regret for the Past”, based on the social reality of China, his own life experience and philosophic thinking. It was an indisputable fact that there existed an obvious influence between Lu Xun's translation and his own creation. However, in fact, some of the works translated by Zhou Zuoren before the “Brothers' Estrangement” in 1923, in particular, some of the works translated by Zhou Zuoren in the collection of the Zhou brothers influenced or had intertextual relations with Lu Xun's works.
