Abstract: The Oceanic genealogy of world Anglophone literature covers over a dozen island countries including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, etc. Standing as an embodiment of a colonial history, this genealogy in its earlier manifestations was comprised of European settler writing in Australia and New Zealand. In the 1960s, indigenous writing grew everywhere across the region. Although both began with what they inherited from English literature, Australian and New Zealand settler writing had American literature as its major influence for change, whereas indigenous writing rose as a result of exposure to African, Afro-American and New Zealand Maori literature. Both streams reflect nationalist resistance against colonial oppression, but observed within the same genealogical framework, they have shown a propensity towards connectivity between themselves and with others around the world. This openness will enable the postcolonial Anglophone literature of this region to contribute to and help reshape world literature of the future.
